What should I ask before buying a dog?

When buying a dog from a breeder, it is important to ask several questions to ensure that you are making an informed decision and getting a healthy and happy pet. Here are some questions you should consider asking the breeder:

  1. Can I see the puppy's parents? Seeing the puppy's parents can give you an idea of the puppy's temperament, size, and appearance.

  2. How do you socialize your puppies? Socialization is critical to a puppy's development and can have a significant impact on its behavior later in life.

  3. What is the puppy's health history? Ask about any health issues that the puppy or its parents have had, and request any relevant health certificates.

  4. What kind of training has the puppy had? If the puppy has received any training, ask about the methods used and what commands the puppy has learned.

  5. What kind of food should I feed the puppy? It's important to feed your puppy a healthy and balanced diet, and the breeder may have specific recommendations.

  6. What kind of exercise does the puppy need? Ask about the puppy's exercise needs and how much exercise it should get each day.

  7. What kind of temperament does the breed have? Different breeds have different temperaments, and it's important to understand what kind of personality traits to expect from your puppy.

  8. Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of? Some breeds are prone to certain health issues, and the breeder can provide information on how to manage or prevent these issues.

  9. Do you have a contract and / or health guarantee? A contract or health guarantee can protect you and the puppy in case of any unexpected issues.

  10. Can I contact you for support or advice after I take the puppy home? A good breeder will be willing to provide, even offer, ongoing support and advice to help you raise a healthy and happy pet.

Any quality, reputable breeder is accepting, even happy to hear, that you have questions about the puppies you are interested in. It's an indicator that you are wanting to make sure you get the right puppy for your, and family's, needs. Also, it is a good indicator to the breeder that you are concerned that your new family member gets started out with the care you plan on continuing them in.
